Our first year participating in Pennies for Patients proved to be a stunning success. Students busily collected spare change for about a month, from December 5th through January 10th, and deposited their contributions in classroom collection boxes before watching those boxes begin to fill the collection jar. Specifically, the Pennies for Patients drive asked kids to collect spare change from friends or relatives--or from under couch cushions--to drop in our giant, 5-gallon collection jar to help people with various blood cancers.
From the generous total Keizer Elementary students collected, it’s easy to see that our students lived the December Character Trait, “Caring,” to its fullest extent. Their efforts earned something greater than spare change: they earned the gratitude of cancer patients and their families.
Oh, that trickle of cash turned into more than 100,000 coins, totaling $1267.44! In fact, the coin counting machine at MAPS Credit Union broke mid-way through the counting task, but fortunately, the mechanical cash counter at Keizer branch of U.S. Bank took over to finish tabulating the total. One can’t put a price on caring, of course, but for those brave young cancer patients, perhaps $1267.00 is a good place to start! |

Keizer Elementary wants to encourage our students to be at school on time every day. To promote great attendance, we are challenging our students to improve their attendance or keep up their efforts. From March 11th through May 31st, all students will have an opportunity to earn a lottery ticket to win a bike and helmet donated by our new business partner, Horace Mann Insurance.
Rules for the Perfect Attendance Spells Success
competition are as follows:
· Students must have perfect attendance between March 11th-May 31st to earn a lottery ticket. Perfect attendance =
no tardies or absences—excused or unexcused.
· Students with most improved attendance will also earn a lottery ticket. This includes students who had chronic poor attendance issues prior to March 11th and turned it around by being on time and in class regularly.
· A master list of students who earned a lottery ticket will be given to teachers on Thursday, May 30th.
All those names will be entered in a drawing done on KKTV on Friday morning, May 31st. The winner will also be announced and parents called to pick up bike.
The bike is on display in the office area!

This years Family BBQ is on June 3rd during the regular student lunchtime. In place of our regular inside-the-building lunch, our food service will be providing an outside BBQ lunch. For $3.00., any parent or younger sibling (one not enrolled in Keizer) can join enrolled students for lunch. Because we will have staff on duty, parents don’t need a background check to attend this event. May 31st will be the deadline for ordering and paying for parent lunches. Though we will have a few tickets available at the door on the day of the BBQ, the cafeteria staff requests that tickets be purchased ahead of time.
